It turned out to be a completely false alarm but it’s good to know people are still looking out for this sort of thing.

White powder mailed to Princeton student prompts quarantine at university mail center in Plainsboro

A white powdery substance mailed to a Princeton University student today prompted a quarantine of the university’s mail center employees in Plainsboro, police said.

The powder turned out to be a food supplement the student had ordered, according to police.

The package arrived about 10:26 a.m. at the Princeton Forrestal Campus at 701 Forrestal Road, off Route 1 North. Workers at the center receive, sort and deliver the mail throughout the university campus.

“The package, an approximate 10-inch by 12-inch cardboard box exhibiting a white powdery substance around the seams, was addressed to a Princeton University student,” police said in a statement.

Workers notified campus public safety officers.

“Four employees that were in the room with the package were quarantined and monitored by EMS but did not exhibit any ill affects,” police said.

The building was evacuated and the Middlesex County Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) unit was called. The hazmat team later determined the the powder to be a safe, non-toxic substance, police said.

“Through further investigation the powder was determined to be a food supplement powder ordered by the student to whom it was addressed,” police said.

“Plainsboro Emergency Services were assisted by members of the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab Fire and EMS departments as well as Middlesex County Hazmat” during the 90-minute incident, police said in the statement.
