Police charge 6 students with hazing at Ohio fraternity; accuser says abuse lasted 3 weeks

Six fraternity members at an Ohio university have been charged with hazing a pledge by beating him with paddles.

Police at the University of Akron say a 22-year-old man told investigators he went to a hospital after being beaten over multiple nights. The accuser says the beatings didn’t stop even after he bled through his pants.

Police on Thursday filed misdemeanor assault and hazing charges against the six members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. A police report says the abuse happened over three weeks in January during the fraternity’s pledge process.

Some of the suspects denied that the man had been beaten and blamed another fraternity for spreading the allegations.

Officials at the university say they shut down the fraternity and don’t tolerate hazing.

A message was left with the fraternity’s national headquarters.
