Prior to reading this report from Cheryl K. Chumley of the Washington Times, I wasn’t even aware that there was a university in Benghazi.

It will be interesting to see if this story is ignored by the media. They don’t have a good record on stories about Benghazi.

American basketball players arrested at Benghazi University

Two Americans were arrested by Libyan military forces in Benghazi and are being held for unknown reasons at the army’s headquarters, various media reported Friday.

The U.S. Embassy in Libya hasn’t yet issued comment. But Fox News reported Friday morning that the Americans were basketball players, arrested on the campus at Benghazi University.

Reuters reported that the two men, who have not been identified, are being held at the Libyan army headquarters.

Reuters also reported that it’s not clear why the men have been detained.

“They were arrested by university guards and then brought by special forces to the army barracks,” one army officials said, in Reuters.

Meanwhile, an Australian and a Briton were found dead, with gunshot wounds on their bodies, in western Libya on Thursday, Reuters reported.

“Their bodies were found near the coastal area of Mellitah,” one source said, to Reuters. And another unnamed source reported to Reuters that the victim from New Zealand was a woman, and from Britain, a man.

Last week, Libyan forces detained four American military officials after the convoy in which they were traveling failed to stop at a checkpoint near Sabratha, Press TV reported. The four were questioned for several hours after Libyan security officials discovered weapons in their possession.
