Living in Liberal Academia

Going into college, I knew I would be outnumbered by liberal classmates, and I knew that I would be subjected to liberal academia. I was prepared for the biased readings assigned and the slightly communist professors, but I was not expecting the contorted perceptions of real events in our history, and I certainly did not expect the sheer disrespect of America’s fallen.

In one of my classes, we were discussing rhetoric used in the media during the American colonial period and we were asked to make a comparison to the modern day. I chose the “war on women” as an example, and explained how the majority of media outlets use certain phrases like it to perpetuate the idea that Republicans are actually conducting a war on women. (Cue the angry glares from the liberals.)

Another student raised their hand and spoke about Obamacare, after which some of my classmates and my professor sarcastically proclaimed “Obamacare will destroy America!” Most of the students laughed, but I sat in the corner contemplating the number of people who have lost access to their healthcare plans, along with the severe intrusion of the government in our lives.

We started talking about the imagery used during the colonial period, and what my professor said next absolutely blew my mind. She described the video which shows the planes crashing into the Twin Towers, and proceeded to explain how this video was “propaganda” for the war on terror.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, propaganda is defined as “ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to help a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.” Ideas or statements. So I am to believe that a video we have all seen is just an idea? And that the two missing buildings which once towered over New York City are just ideas? And the 3,000 innocent American lives lost are, again, just ideas?
