I’m going to go out on a limb here. Why is it offensive to make fun of Osama Bin Laden?

Wash U students’ Bin Laden costume sparks outrage

Some members of the Washington University Muslim community are voicing outrage after a group of students posted a picture to Facebook showing them dressed as soldiers for Halloween alongside a costume of Osama Bin Laden.

The post, titled “Halloween ‘13. Amurrica!!,” shows three students in tank tops pointing what appears to be water guns at a student on his knees wearing a gray beard and beanie. A fifth student is holding an American flag in the background.

Mahroh Jahangiri reposted the photo of the students’ costumes, claiming it contained anti-Muslim sentiment. The post has since spread across the web, getting 835 likes and 176 shares by about 10:45 a.m. Thursday.

Her post also contained a seven-paragraph caption.

“This photo and its “Amurrica” caption imply that “Amurrica” is white (male) Americans; people with beards, or of darker color, or implicitly Muslims, are not. This photo implies that not only are Muslims not American, their lives are expendable,” Jahangiri’s post reads in part.

“I am asking – I am begging my friends and peers at WU do look beyond the group with which they ‘identify’ and RAISE HELL ABOUT THIS. Be loud even if this doesn’t target you,” she continues. “Demand a response on behalf of the handful of WU students this photo ripped to pieces. This is disgusting and cannot be tolerated on this campus.”

According to the university student online publication, Student Life, school administrators scheduled an 8 a.m. emergency meeting to discuss the post.

The report says the Muslim Students Association would host an open forum in Tisch Commons at 8 p.m. Thursday.
