Emerson students file federal complaint alleging school failed to properly investigate sexual assaults
A group of Emerson College students has filed a federal complaint alleging school administrators failed to properly investigate, and in some cases downplayed, their claims of sexual assault, according to two of the students involved in the complaint.
Emerson officials said Wednesday the school’s president plans to send a campus-wide letter later in the afternoon to respond to news reports of the complaint being filed.
“This isn’t about us. This is about future victims,” said one of the complainants, Sarah Tedesco, a 19-year-old Emerson sophomore from Florida.
“The reason we’re doing this is not to get attention for ourselves,” she added. “It’s not to hate on the school. It’s very clearly and very passionately to make changes on campus and to raise awareness that this happens.”
Two students involved in the complaint have spoken publicly, Tedesco and junior Jillian Doherty. They have each said the allegations were filed last week with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
In an interview with the Globe, Tedesco said the group that filed the complaint is larger than her and Doherty, but she declined to say how many other students are involved or to give a copy of the complaint, citing the privacy of the others who do not plan to speak publicly.
