We have been covering the reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Missouri State University student Lindsey Kolb shares her take, which is considerably more civil than those offered by other young scholars.

Despite the upset people that are against any gay marriage legalization at all, we must look at this court ruling as a win for the conservative “small government” advocates. Big government lost in this case. This decision only really allowed same-sex couples rights to federal government rights. It did not decide the legality of gay marriage in individual states (Section 2 of DOMA still permits each state to recognize or not recognize gay marriages from other states), just how the federal government views it on a broad level. Dana Loesch comments that, “The party who filibustered the Civil Rights Act (Democrats) will say they ‘evolved,’ which is code for ‘waffle.’ If after today Democrats want to finally agree with conservatives that big government is bad, I’m sure we’d accept their admission of error.” At a time when it seems like federal government handouts, programs, Obama-phones, EBT cards, and disastrous health care expansion is at it’s peak, this decision is a little glimmer of hope for the small-government Conservative supporters.I know many Conservatives, like myself, had to sit back speechless after the court ruling. Many Conservatives have advocated for many years to defend the legalization of marriage to only be between and man and a woman. This ruling seems like a slap in the face to some of the people who have worked to hard to protect the religious covenant between a man and a woman in a marriage.

As upset as some of us Conservative and traditional marriage supporters may be, we should look to the Constitution and remember that free will that is given to citizens of this great state of America. The freedom to be different and not abide by any religious denomination or religious rules at all was why the colonists came to America in the first place, remember? They came to escape the laws and rules that imposed religion on the country so they left to discover a new land where they could choose to believe what they wanted and practice whatever religion or lack or religion they wanted.

….Maybe now that this provision of DOMA has been overturned it will allow us to have a rest from the endless gay marriage debate and the rest of America and our politicians can now move on to more pressing issues, like the economy, jobs, and our national defense. Now, we can await the next Supreme Court rulings.
