University’s International Center for the Study of Terrorism to close

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Coordinators of Penn State’s International Center for the Study of Terrorism (ICST) have announced that the program will close on June 30. Program director John Horgan and senior research associate Mia Bloom have announced that they will assume new positions at the Center for Terrorism and Security Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, this summer, where they plan to continue their work.

The ICST, with headquarters in the Department of Psychology at Penn State, was established in 2006 as a collaborative partnership among several international universities to study the social psychology of terrorism and to understand its long-term effects on society. Researchers at the center in the past have secured grants from the Department of Homeland Security, the Office of Naval Research and other agencies.

“On behalf of our University community, I would like to thank Dr. Horgan and his colleagues for their important work at Penn State,” said Susan Welch, dean of the College of the Liberal Arts. “As we worked through their departure it became clear that the center’s efforts no longer matched the strategic directions of relevant departments.”
