Mass Killing Transformed to Lone Suicide at U. Central Florida
Change of plans attributed to the prompt response of campus police.
Some students at a school in Florida woke up yesterday to a fire alarm, only to be evacuated when investigators made some grim discoveries.
Based on their preliminary findings, police now believe the suicide victim intended to stage a mass slaying of fellow students.
The local CBS news affiliate offers these details on Monday’s early morning events:
Authorities said hundreds of students were evacuated from a dorm on the University of Central Florida campus early Monday after weapons, explosive devices and a dead body were discovered in one of the rooms.
University police were called to the dorm around 12:20 a.m. after a fire alarm went off, UCF spokesman Grant Heston said. While they were on their way to the scene, a 911 call came in about a man with a gun.
Arriving officers found a man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a residence at the Tower 1 dorm in Orlando. Officials have not said whether the dead man was a university student.
Heston said the dorm has suites, with a main kitchen and living area, along with four bedrooms. The dead man was inside one of the rooms. Inside the room, police also found an assault weapon, a handgun and improvised explosive devices.
Fox News now reports that police have determined that the victim of suicide was actually initially planning to kill other students, but then changed his mind because of the rapid response of campus police:
Authorities say a University of Central Florida student who pulled a dorm fire alarm in the middle of the night had a more sinister plan than sending students scurrying out into the night.
Campus police said Monday that 30-year-old James Oliver Seevakumaran was armed with two guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a backpack filled with explosives and a plan to attack other students as they fled the seven-story dorm where he lived.
His plans were thrown off by campus police officers’ quick response to the fire alarm and a 911 call from Seevakumaran’s roommate who had holed himself in a bathroom after Seevakumaran pointed a gun at him.
Police officers found Seevakumaran dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his dorm room. No other students were hurt.
