CT Community College Offers Nanny State “Parent University”
How did billions and billions of parents throughout human history ever get by without help from big government and big education? The folks at Gateway Community College in Connecticut have finally come up with a solution to this non-problem.
The College Fix has the story.
Nanny-State Watch: College Launches Program to Train Parents
Do politicians and academic leaders know what’s best for your kids? Some folks seem to think so. In partnership with the New Haven Public School system, Gateway Community College of New Haven, CT will host a day-long forum next month called “Parent University,” with the aim of teaching parents how to parent.
According to the New Haven Register, Parent University “offers a wide variety of workshop topics including: How to help your child study for exams, planning for college, how to support teenagers, navigating the public school system, reading with your child and fun ways to teach math. Non-academic support workshops will educate parents on how to protect their children from cyber-bullying and abuse.” There will also be a workshop called, “Where will I live?” all about low-income housing.
Most of these programs sound innocent enough, possibly even helpful. But something about this event makes us uneasy here at The College Fix. Maybe it’s the fact that “Parent University” is co-sponsored by a litany of left-leaning community groups like the United Way. Or maybe it’s because we think parents generally know more about what’s best for kids than bureaucrats do.
Years ago, Hillary Clinton told us it takes a village to raise a child. Now, are we supposed to believe it takes a community college too?
We wish them well at “Parent University.” But I have a hard time believing in the efficacy of any event intended to benefit children, when it’s sponsored by United Way, which donates millions to Planned Parenthood in order to kill them.
