It’s not true that what goes up must come down (when it comes to tuition hikes at U.Va.)
Samara Brown at U.Va. learns that the laws of physics do not apply to tuition:
Surprise, surprise. As this 2011-2012 academic year at the University of Virginia comes to a close, an annual ritual has come along with it. No, not commencement, but rather the annual hike in tuition has come again. The University of Virginia Board of Visitors has approved of a 4 percent tuition hike for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year….
Shockingly, this is actually good news for UVa students and their parents. The 4 percent jump in tuition was expected to be much higher, and it is lower than percentage tuition had increased in the past. The current academic year (2011-2012) saw an 8.9 percent increase in tuition. The 2010-2011 academic year had a 9.9 percent increase in tuition.
Of course, the University of Virginia is one of the best places to get an education in the country…. Nevertheless, the annual increase in tuition has got to be extremely frustrating and worrying to students and their parents. It seems each year it becomes more difficult for parents to send their children to Mr. Jefferson’s university.

There is no “law of physics” that says “what goes up must come down”.
